It is crucial to prepare our children with the necessary skills to flourish in a society which so relies on computing and all forms of ICT. We aim to equip all of our children with a wide range of computing skills, ensuring they are confident to use known equipment and explore new technology. 

We strive for our children to have a broad understanding of and to achieve high standards in computing, and it is therefore a key part of our teaching and learning across the curriculum.

Our recently refurbished computing suite within the library and our portable laptop trolleys enable our children to have access to a bank of networked and Internet connected Netbooks and laptops. All classes have a discrete computing lesson every week, using a range of computing equipment and programs. Tasks are enhanced through the use of meaningful, contextual, audience led projects linked in to topic work. There are also many portable handheld devices and programmable toys such as Beebots, ensuring the children have a rich range of experiences.

Computing is embedded throughout the school, and each classroom has a networked computer or laptop and an interactive whiteboard which teachers use throughout the day.  These provide a strong visual aid to learning as well as being a tool for children to practise and develop their skills in a wide range of curriculum areas.

Online safety is always a priority and is taught through explicit computing lessons as well as embedding the importance of staying safe online throughout the curriculum when relevant to do so.  Please see the Safeguarding Policy for more information.


Computing is a core subject of the National Curriculum, which we use to plan units of work, ensuring a clear progression of skills.

The computing curriculum covers three main areas:

  • Digital literacy - the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills
  • Information technology – teaching the children to use systems to store, send and retrieve information
  • Computer science – the study of computers, creating simple algorithms (a series of instructions, for example to make a graphic move)
